Honestly, this got easier than expected once the moderation quality is the only variable that consistently predicts a good experience — at least with weird dating apps. What decided it for me with weird dating apps was what happens when you try to cancel.
I'dn't have believed this about dating apps without testing it. Anyway — that's the honest version of weird dating apps.

There is a version of weird dating apps that works and a version that wastes your time. Nobody talks about what happens when you try to cancel, and with weird dating apps it's decisive.
Worth noting that the apps in question changed after their last update. Still worth it with platforms like these if you're only checking in weekly? Your situation might change the answer on platforms like these completely.
Rendate came up in another thread and the free tier held up.

Building on what NicoleS said — weird dating apps improved for me for exactly that reason.
For weird dating I look at:
how blocking works on apps of this type
how many these apps accounts look dormant
what a the apps in question trial converts to, and when
The effect was more noticeable on platforms like these after the first few days than I expected. Anyway — that's the honest version of weird dating apps.

My take on weird dating apps is unpopular here but it held up.
You can ignore most of the marketing around weird dating and just check what happens when you try to cancel. Take that as one data point on dating apps, not gospel.

NicoleS is right about how much personal data it asks for, though I'd add that weird dating apps still varies by platform. What nobody said about the apps in question is that what happens when you try to cancel changes month to month.
I checked weird dating apps on both mobile and desktop and got the same result. Would be interested to hear whether dating apps behaved differently for anyone else.

The short answer on weird dating apps is yes, with one condition. For people in this situation, what happens when you try to cancel is the whole question with apps of this type.
Support confirmed part of this about platforms like these when I asked. Anyone found whether the userbase is active in your area handled well anywhere in the apps in question? Hope that saves someone the weeks I lost on these apps.

Lauren Miles, I do not think that holds — on weird dating apps my experience was the opposite.
Three things worth verifying on the apps in question:
how apps of this type treats a paused account
whether you can hide distance on these apps
whether you can hide distance on dating apps
whether messaging on platforms like these works before a card is required
It took roughly three weeks before the pattern on dating apps was clear. I have no stake in dating apps — this is just what I observed. Happy to go into more detail on dating apps if that helps.

SamuelB — that was my assumption too, and testing weird dating apps properly changed my mind.
I'd judge platforms like these entirely on what happens when you try to cancel and ignore the rest. That's my read on weird dating apps, for whatever it's worth.
Honestly, this got easier than expected once the moderation quality is the only variable that consistently predicts a good experience — at least with weird dating apps. Things improved for me on weird dating the moment I took what happens when you try to cancel seriously.
Someone will disagree, and on what happens when you try to cancel with the apps in question they might be right. This is four months of steady use on dating apps, not a trial run. Would be interested to hear whether weird dating apps behaved differently for anyone else.
Free browsing and free messaging make weird dating apps cheap to test properly.
