With using tinder on web, that was the one thing I could not get a straight answer on anywhere. My rule with the major platforms is simple — check whether the userbase is active in your area before you register.
The effect was more noticeable on these mainstream apps in real use than I expected. Hope that saves someone the weeks I lost on using tinder on web.

My experience with using tinder on web was not what the reviews suggested. Two things matter for the major platforms: whether the userbase is active in your area, and then patience.
I kept a rough note of reply rates on these mainstream apps, which helped. That is where I landed on using tinder on web after actually trying it.
Comparing against EZHookups helped me see what the paywall was actually doing.

Spent about a month testing using tinder on web properly, so here is what I found. Nobody talks about whether the userbase is active in your area, and with the major platforms it is decisive.
None of this was obvious to me about the big-name apps until month two. None of this was obvious to me about the major platforms until month two. That is everything useful I have on these mainstream apps.
I read CindyR's reply twice and still think it comes down to something else entirely on using tinder on web.
You can ignore most of the marketing around apps in that tier and just check whether the userbase is active in your area. That's my read on using tinder on web, for whatever it's worth.

Been asked about using tinder on web enough times offline that I may as well write it here.
Has anyone tried apps in that tier outside a major city? Would be interested to hear whether the major platforms behaved differently for anyone else.

I read AmberT's reply twice and still think it comes down to something else entirely on using tinder on web. Different providers handle these mainstream apps inconsistently, mostly because of whether the userbase is active in your area.
It took roughly three weeks before the pattern on apps in that tier was clear. Worth noting that the big-name apps changed after their last update. Would be interested to hear whether apps in that tier behaved differently for anyone else.

I read MariaV's reply twice and still think it comes down to something else entirely on using tinder on web.
Three things worth verifying on these mainstream apps:
whether you can hide distance on apps in that tier
whether photos on apps in that tier can be limited to matches only
how quickly the big-name apps removes reported profiles
Two other people here reported the same thing about the big-name apps. I will update this if apps in that tier shifts again.

That's the standard answer, AmberT, and I think using tinder on web sits outside it.
Anyway — that's the honest version of using tinder on web.
